Resumo
La civilización del espectáculo (Notes on the Death of Culture: Essays on Spectacle and Society) by Mario Vargas Llosa is a corpus of symbols and literary, theoretical, and political ideas that brings together articles published mainly in El País between 1993 and 2011, yet it does not appear fragmentary. It is associated to an international tradition of thought that—from Leopardi, Gioberti, and others to Julien Benda, Ernest Curtius, Günter Anders, and Edward Said—has questioned the relationship between civilization and intellectuals, as well as the destiny of humanity and the misleading vision currently being disseminated. For Vargas Llosa, literature does not copy reality; rather, it serves as an axis for rethinking and understanding the world. By reaffirming the centrality of the humanistic challenge and the need to combat the widespread abandonment of culture and ethics in the name of the pseudovalues of spectacle, Vargas Llosa performs an act of responsibility—faithful to the teachings of Albert Camus—against the nihilism and
cynicism that seem to overwhelm everything.
